The COMMUNITY tab is the set.a.light 3D community, shown inside the program window: an archive of lighting setups other photographers have published, each with the finished photo, two views of the studio, the lighting diagram and a data sheet. You go there for inspiration — and because every entry is a real set that you can download and take apart light by light.
Applies to BASIC, STUDIO, CINEMA · A licence can have the community switched off · You need: an internet connection, and an open project for downloading or sharing.
Where to find it
Click COMMUNITY in the tab bar, next to SETUP, RENDER and PLANS. The tab has two halves: the community website on the right, and a panel on the left that carries the Timeline of the project you have open, its rating filter and the folder dropdown. The panel’s hint says Share a setup with the community or download setups to your timeline — those are the two things this tab does with your project.
The website is a website. What it offers can change without a program update, so the section below is dated.
What the page offers (as of set.a.light 3D 3.1.14)
- Browsing, searching and filtering happen on the page itself, with the controls the site shows.
- Opening one entry shows what the uploader published: the rendered photo, the two studio views, the lighting diagram and the data sheet of the shot — the same package described in Share a shot with the community.
- The download button sits on that page. What happens next is in Download a setup.
- The site can hand a link to your normal web browser instead of opening it inside the program.
- The same pages are reachable from a normal browser at community.elixxier.com.
This short clip shows the community in set.a.light 3D and how a setup is shared.
What the program hands to the site
When the tab opens the page, set.a.light 3D passes these values so that the site fits your installation:
| Value | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Your licence serial | The licence this installation is activated with |
| Your interface language | The language the program is set to |
| Your unit system | The Unit of Measurement setting, metric or imperial |
| Your program version | The version you are running |
| An identifier of the computer | Added on a trial only |
Opening one setup’s page sends the same values without the trial identifier, plus that setup’s ID. Nothing else leaves the program on its own — a set file travels only when you download one or upload one yourself.
Signing in and registering happen on the page, not in the program. Changing a published post, and taking one down, are done there too.
A setup is a shot
What the community calls a setup becomes a shot in your project’s TIMELINE once you download it. The Timeline in the left panel of this tab is that list of shots — not the frame ruler of the ANIMATION tab, which is a different thing entirely. See Take and manage shots.
The way back to a page
A shot that came from the community, or that you published, keeps its community ID. Select it on the RENDER tab: the inspector shows Set ID: (English in every language) — click the ID to copy it — and an Open in Community button that switches to this tab and opens that setup’s page.
Double-clicking an entry in the Timeline of this tab does the opposite: it switches to SETUP and loads that shot into the studio.
When the tab shows no page
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The page stays empty or does not finish loading | No connection to the community server | Check your internet connection, then switch tabs and come back |
| Community is disabled through license settings | The community is switched off for this licence — usual for volume and school licences | Nothing you can change in the program; ask whoever manages the licence |
| “The community failed to initialize. Please report this as a bug.” | The built-in browser could not start | Send the bug report. This one is not something you can fix |
After you activate or change a licence, the tab reloads and you sign in again — the program clears the session on purpose so that no account data is left behind for the next licence.
